Alonzo was crossing the creek now, the wood bridge creaking under his converse tennis shoes. He couldn’t help but stop and stare at the water. He could remember when he was 8 and his father was teaching him how to fish, he could also remember the proud look on his father’s face when he caught his first fish with no help. The memories hurt too much, so Alonzo resumed walking.

‘Yeah, right.’ Alonzo thought as he watched his mother get in her car to leave for her job as the supervisor of Wal-Mart. He waited awhile before putting on his black hoodie and walking out the door. He walked at a generally slow pace, taking time to look at the bare trees and the almost completely dead grass. It was late fall, all the leaves had long since died and fallen to the groundHe and his father had been close, very close. When his father disappeared, Alonzo had been devastated. What made Alonzo angry more then anything was that his mother was still avoiding the truth. That his father wasn’t coming back. Alonzo wanted to believe his father was dead, because it would hurt worse if he knew his father was alive, and didn’t care enough to come back.

Thoughts of death, heartbreak, loneliness, and the inability to reconcile past mistakes fill the minds of people that are ready to put themselves in death's hands. They stand and slowly fall to their knees as they prepare to face defeat, without looking back. Death arrives at their doorstep ready to take them to their eternal death. And as they say their final goodbyes to the people that they have lost, they regret everything they never had and they put all their pain into one solid tear. Now into the abyss we die.
