- Automakers Use Noise Reduction Technology to Design Quiet Cars Automotive upgrades once reserved for high-end cars, like air conditioning, leather and hi-tech stereo systems, now come standard in most cars. So what separates a premium car from an everyday car? Noise reduction is one way manufacturers are raising the bar. Quiet engines, quiet exhaust systems and quiet tires are often equated with high quality vehicles. To achieve the sound of silence, companies like GM are using noise reduction engineering called Quiet Tuning. In fact, they spent hours in wind tunnels with the Buick La Crosse refining design elements like rearview mirrors and the front grill. In addition to a quiet shape, they also kept unwanted noise from coming through glass surfaces by using laminated glass. Produced for General Motors
