- There's nothing more comical than baby hummers learning how to use the feeders. Here they are in all their goofy splendor... filmed at real speed... during the first week of August... bzzzzzzzing around, colliding in mid air, challenging one another, all trying to drink from the same station. Very soon they will migrate... and this video is posted to ask for their safe passage and for them to return safely to the mountain next spring. AMAZING HUMMINGBIRD FACTS: They live up to 10 years. Some of them migrate 5,000 miles. Wingbeats are as much as 78 times per second. Heartbeats are 1,260 beats per minute. Flight speeds vary between 25-65 mph. They remember from year to year where the food is. BUMMER TO BE A BABY HUMMER (original poem) 08 02 08 I got my new wings today!!! I fell outta the nest and flew Straight through the leaves And down the big trees Into the sky so blue I learned how to hover today!!! It was not a beautiful sight I fell off of a limb And ran smack into Clem And gave both our mothers a fright I learned how to buzzzzzzzz today!!! My mom let us go out and play I zzzzzzigged when I could A zzzzzzzzzzag woulda been good A concussion might be on the way I found the red feeder today!!! I can see it from up in my nest Unfortunately For my brothers and me It puts all our skills to the test Wise Words to you other new hummers.... If a walking blond flower appears Race back to your limbs Or she'll catch you on film For a YouTube video whim Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!!
