Hajime no Ippo, known in English as the Fighting Spirit was my first exposure to sporting anime. It did not take me long to realise that I was hooked on the bitter/sweet adventures of young Ippo who, like many boxers, began his career as a victim to bullies and who finds in boxing, not a means of revenge against those bullies but a way of finding inner strength and meaning. For Ippo, boxing brings him alive. The series is an emotional roller coaster with humour and tragedy both to be found in realistic proportions. The repeptitive animation can be forgiven when the plot is so fast-moving and the characters so likeable (or dislikable).
Thee have been several spin offs from the 'Ippo' series including 2 movie-length offerings and several vide games. The most recent is a Wii boxing game
How about you? What is your favourite sports anime and why? Oh, and by the way, YES, I DO love boxing! :)
